The Charles River Basin did not exist before 1910. Engineers dammed the tidal estuary, transforming mudflats into a controlled freshwater basin that separated Cambridge from Boston while connecting both to the Atlantic via a system of locks.
The 1908 Charles River Dam gave the city a permanent water level, ending centuries of tidal flooding and creating the flat mirror that reflects Beacon Hill, the Longfellow Bridge, and MIT's riverfront laboratories today.
By the 1950s, the basin had become a recreational artery. Sailing clubs, university rowing shells, and public parks replaced industrial wharves. The Esplanade, designed by Arthur Shurcliff, opened in phases between 1928 and 1936, its tree-lined paths anchoring a green corridor that runs three miles from the Museum of Science to the Harvard Bridge. The basin now hosts more than 200 regattas annually, including the Head of the Charles, the world's largest two-day rowing event, which draws 11,000 athletes each October.
